Welcome to a Hidden Gem“….

I’d like to extend you the warmest welcome to our Spring 2018 British Eventing Horse Trials. We’ve been working hard to make further improvements to the courses for this new season.

Set on the South Downs in the beautiful Kentish village of Chilham and against the beautiful backdrop of Chilham Castle, we look forward to once again see horses and riders compete in the sport of eventing over the mature Chilham Castle parkland designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

What to expect onsite…

The entire showground is nicely compact with the lorry park being located centrally to all three phases. All courses provide competitors with inviting and fair challenges at each level, with well-built fences over well-established, undulating parkland.

The ground drains very quickly and stands up well to wet weather. We use a BE approved irrigation system to make sure the ground is prepared to the highest possible level.

The dressage takes place on the flattest part of the estate on well-established old turf set beside the beautiful lake and looking up at Chilham Castle. The area is very quiet being set apart away from the tannoys and hustle of the rest of the competition. It is a short walk from the lorry park – so do allow a few extra minutes.

The show jumping is set in a spacious area beside the Chilham Castle lake. We try to run to times with a gap every 5 riders for multiple riders – we have a fantastic show jumping steward who makes this work brilliantly!

Our new cross-country course introduced in 2016 utilises additional areas of the estate and is well-received by competitors. Over the winter months, Chilham continued their long-term investment in land management and the development and maintenance of the cross country course, with new fences introduced for 2018.

A Day In The Country…

Spectators are always very welcome at Chilham Park – we hope you will enjoy the spectacle of the event.

There is a small entry fee of £5 per car (including all the occupants) or £1 per person for pedestrians.

Please be aware that the irregular terrain and distances may be unsuitable for some spectators. If you have specific mobility needs, please do get in touch as soon as possible so that we can advise. As an outdoor event, we recommend that suitable clothing and footwear is worn; high heels are not practical particularly if you wish to walk the cross country course.

Dogs must be kept on a leash and under control at all times. Children should be under your direct supervision at all times.

Spectators are permitted to walk the cross-country course but are asked to take careful note of any fencing or stringing and to pay close attention to signage, public address announcements and the warning blasts on the whistle of officials, these are for your safety .. half a ton of horse travelling at speed does not swerve easily.

All vehicles must be parked in designated areas. The use of motorbikes, all terrain vehicles (quad-bikes) and four-wheel-drive vehicles are not permitted on the site during the period of the event unless specifically authorised by the Organiser.

Chilham Park shall not incur any liability except as required by law, in respect of any injury or damage to visitors or their property howsoever caused.
